The implementation of the contract is part of the project for the major repair of Road II-53 Polikraishte – Elena – Sliven, covering a section of nearly 27 kilometers. The project is financed by the Operational Program “Regions in Growth” 2014-2020 through the European Regional Development Fund and the national budget. The secondary road is a main transport artery along the Veliko Tarnovo – Sliven – Yambol direction and connects the North Central region with the Southeastern region and the Trakia Motorway. To accelerate the completion of the repair, the route is divided into two sections – Lot 31a and Lot 31b. Lot 31a is in the Veliko Tarnovo region and is 11.890 km long. It starts about 600 meters before the intersection with Road III-4004 Juliyitsa – Zlatartitsa and ends at the bridge structure at the beginning of the town of Elena. Lot 31b is in the Sliven region and is 15.100 km long. It includes part of the “Vrathnik” Pass. The starting point of the section is at km 72, between the villages of Maisko and Stara Reka.

Details

As part of the execution contract, a massive reinforced concrete wall was constructed at the drainage structure at km 80+520 to reinforce a weak point in this section of the road;
The wall was implemented with a slope in five separate sections, with a total length of 40 meters, heights ranging from 4.00 to 4.50 meters, and a foundation measuring 2.80x1.60x40.00 meters;
Eight small drainage structures (culverts), built from stone masonry and compromised over the years due to heavy vehicle traffic, were rehabilitated;
The reconstruction of the structures included the construction of new abutments, walls, and wings, all founded on new foundations. Steel-concrete slabs were placed over the culverts. New sidewalk cantilevers were also built.
