The site represents the reinforcement of one of the most severe and large-scale landslides in Bulgaria, which has repeatedly caused the road to the Rila Massif to be buried and closed over the years.
The project was implemented in two stages. In 2020, a massive retaining wall was built and the earth-rock slope above the road was secured. In 2021, a reinforced concrete tunnel-type structure was built, ensuring safe passage to the holy monastery, which is also a cultural monument included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
